African hair is big business! Nothing is as important as the styling and presentation of African women's hair. Hairstyles are changed every single month, giving women a completely different look. African women love their braided hair, weaves, natural hair, bald cuts, as well as Afros (fake or not!). You will spot roadside hairdressers in any African village. Many come with great decor and names, some even being called Saloons (as opposed to Salons). Ever stopped by the 'Semausu' to try out 'Ma Fresh' (Fried Chips) ?? In Botswana we also have our own take on fast food. In Maun, guests will see many stalls on the road side cooking and selling food. These individuals have a hawker’s license to do this and often sponsored through various government entrepreneurial funding programmes. While for some this is a side hustle, a way to earn extra money or others this is their main job. One of the offerings from these stalls is called Ma Fresh. This is fried chips but instead of being crispy, they are more soggy chips. They are called ‘Ma Fresh’ because they are made from fresh potatoes. They are eaten anytime. They are very popular at my work where staff eat these with a magwinya, often as early as 8h30 in the morning.
